Prior to joining Lake Michigan College, Michael worked with Figgins Family Wine Estates in Walla Walla, Washington where he crafted a variety of wines for the esteemed Leonetti label, as well as Doubleback, Figgins, and Toil Oregon. He also worked with famed California brands, Etude and Peter Michael Winery.

Michael was instrumental in developing the Enology & Viticulture program at Walla Walla Community College. He has mentored dozens of students throughout the years, who are now a part of the fabric of the wine industry.

Michael de Schaaf
Vineyard and Winery Manager

Michael de Schaaf (originally of Benton Harbor, Michigan) has vast experience in the Michigan wine industry. He has produced wine for several area wineries, including Hickory Creek Winery, which he owned and operated for seven years. In 2002, he founded Lake Michigan Shore Wine Growers and operates a vineyard consultant business.

Michael plays a critical role in teaching students the best winemaking and viticulture practices. As a vineyard manager, Michael is a proponent of Integrated Pest Management and is always looking at ways to reduce inputs, while improving overall fruit quality. In the winery, Michael allows the grapes to express their characteristics without heavy manipulations. Classic, old world techniques paired with modern testing and technologies are the backbone of his style.

Kayla Betker
Tasting Room Manager

Kayla Betker was born and raised in St. Joseph, Michigan.  She has been creating excellent customer service experiences in southwest Michigan for the past 9 years.  She started out bussing tables at a local restaurant as a teenager.  But as her passion for the hospitality industry grew, she quickly moved into a management position.

Kayla has learned and studied up on wine and vineyards all over the world.  The more that Kayla learned about the wine industry, she discovered, as many of her customers have done, that Michigan is a fantastic place for vineyards and is capable of producing world class wines. Kayla will be happy to share some of these wines with you at our Lake Michigan Vintners tasting room in Baroda.
